This machine has three reels that spin at the push of a button. Some of the slot machines are operated using a lever that is on the side of the machine. This lever on one side of the slot machines led to it being nicknamed the one armed bandit and also owing to the fact that it left gamers penniless. These machines are fitted with currency detectors that check the validity of the coins slotted in. The machine pays according to the symbols shown on the reels as machine stops rolling. Slot machines are very popular in the casinos and have been known to generate huge incomes.

The slot machine was first developed in the USA by Sittman and Pitt in 1891. Their machine contained five drums that held a total of 50 cards with faces and was based on poker. The machine did not have a direct way of paying out as it is today. Back then say when a player got a pair of kings he would get a beer and a royal flush would payout cigars and drinks.

The prizes won depended on what was available at that recreation center. To make the odds better for the house the two cards were removed from the deck the ten of spades and the jack of hearts which cut the chances of getting a royal flush by half. The drums could also be rearranged to reduce the players’ chances of winning. Later Charles Fay devised a machine with three spinning reels and five symbols, horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a liberty bell and this machine gave a direct payout.

Three bells in a row gave the biggest payoff. The game got very popular that even after its ban manufacturers could not cope with demand. In 1964 a fully electromechanical slot machine was developed by Bally and it was called Money Honey. This was the first slot machine to have a bottomless hopper and give an automatic payout of up to 500 coins with no need of an attendant by the machine. The slot machine does not require any skill from the player and winning is merely by chance.
